Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The Lady Pirates of Hampton University fall to 4-4 on the season after a tough 63-60 overtime loss to the University of Alabama. Hampton was lead by senior guard Artavia Burns, who scored team high 20 points for the Lady Pirates. With the win the Tide advances to 5-7 on the season.
The Lady Pirates were up 56-55 with 1:26 to go, when Alabama’s Tamara Williams knocked a free throw to tie the game. Hampton had the last possession of regulation but the Tide came up with a huge defensive stop. Sophomore Dedrea Magee blocked Burns’ shot as time expired to send the game into overtime.
In the first half the Lady Pirates shot 34% (10-of-29) from the floor to take the lead 24-21 at the intermission. Hampton was guided by Burns who scored 11 points in the first half alone. The Lady Pirates scored 12 points in the paint, 13 points off 18 Tide turnovers, and seven points off of the bench. The first half saw eight led changes before the Lady Pirates could get things mustered together and take the lead at 24-21.
The Lady Pirates would go on a quick 6-0 run in the second to go ahead 40-30 with 13:40 remaining in the contest. Shortly after that Alabama went on a 14-0 run to take 44-40 lead with 9:48 to go.
Alabama shot 49 percent (24-for-49) from the floor and while Hampton shot only 39 percent (24-for-62). The Lady Pirates also forced 32 Alabama turnover and scored 28 points off of those turnovers. Hampton also scored 28 points in the paint and 27 point off the bench.
Burns shot 50 percent from beyond the three point arc (3-for-6) and also scoring in double digits for Hampton was Laura Lewis who scored 10 points.
The Lady Pirates will be off until after Christmas when they will travel to Ames, Iowa to take part in the Iowa State Tournament from December 28-30. For more scores and updates go to
